Hi, I'm enjoying testing with SimpleTagger, but there seems to be a bug in the output when calling it on a test file ( adding labels to the test data with no labels). Sometimes the ultimate and penultimate columns with features values get switched in the output file. For example,

John NOUN person

might end up:

John person NOUN

after invoking SimpleTagger.

Is this a known bug? Is it some issue with the test file format?

Hi Erik,

Are you saying that the order of the feature names gets switched up, or the that the name of the output isn't always ending up in the same column? I haven't used SimpleTagger for a while, but IIRC in the output, the name of the output label should end up in the first column, while the names of the features are in columns 2--end. The features may appear in a different order than they did in the input file.

You can also ask questions like this on the mallet-dev mailing list. More people read that, so you're likely to get a faster response.

Charles, Hi, I think we worked together at Cycorp! Long time no talk. Anyway, I sent a request to subscribe to mallet-dev. In the meantime, what I'm saying is that the feature names in columns 2 to end do in fact appear in a different order. It appears that this is a feature not a bug! The problem I'm having with this is that I have some code that counts on one of the features--the actual tokens (words, etc) from the input-- to appear in the same column. I'm doing named entity recognition work and I'm combining the label and token sequences to generate output documents. It looks like this won't work with SimpleTagger currently. Do you know if it's easy enough to fix the feature sequence so that they don't appear in a different order than the input file, or should I just count on getting the label sequence from SimpleTagger, and write my own code to keep track of the token sequence (i.e., get the label sequence from MALLET, match it to the token sequence with my own code?).

I think it would be pretty tough to force SimpleTagger to preserve the feature order. But you should be able to extract the word-identity features from the input file, yes? If I understand your problem corr
